Details:
This fun and engaging workshop is aimed at action sport photography enthusiasts and aspiring professionals wanting to improve their photography —whatever their level— and learn the secrets of a pro photographer’s success.
This is not a riding clinic: you don't need to be the perfect, most skilled rider; just be able to ride your bike on trails!
Who:
Dan Milner is an award-winning action sports photographer, with 20+ years of experience as a professional. He has documented some of the World’s most challenging adventure and expedition assignments, from mountain biking in Afghanistan to snow-camping among polar bears in the Arctic, and his work regularly appears in many of the World’s quality press. He has shot for countless companies, including include Trek Bikes, Yeti Cycles, Osprey Packs, The North Face, Giro, Shimano and Voelkl Skis.
What:
This three-day, practical workshop will teach you how to deliver more impact to your action-sports photography, and how to find that potential in the unique studio that is the great outdoors.
You’ll learn how to combine the power of nature’s aesthetics and the drama of action to produce images that will get you noticed in your mountain bike, action sports and adventure photography —whether you’re shooting for fun, for more likes on social media or with an aim to making a living out of your photography. The workshop will be taught in English.
How:
You'll be accompanied by:
- a professional mountain bike guide who’ll oversee your guiding, logistics and safety each day
- a driver and a shuttle following the group every day making transitions and transfers faster and smoother
- Dan Milner: the Jedi-knight in this amazing experience and the key to developing your photo skills
Itinerary:
Arrival Day: We meet for the evening to welcome you to the adventure. In a relaxed setting this is our chance to get to know each other and get acquainted with Dan's work and experience, and set the tone for the days to come. This will be a chance to ask questions, make requests and get a feel for what this experience is all about.
Day 1-3: Each day will start with a short brief for the day (over coffees of course!). We'll introduce you to the locations, timetable and the main photography skill sets of the day ahead. Following the brief, a short shuttle will deliver us to the trailhead, from where we ride in to continue shooting and learning.
As you’d expect from an authentic Italian experience, food is central to the day, so of course we’ll plan the best lunch stops we can.
The Workshop will cover:
This workshop is 100% interactive, letting you dive deeper on any aspects of action-sports photography you wish to explore. There are no tests, no exams; just sharing information and experience. Giving constructive direction and offering immediate feedback on your shots will help speed up the learning curve. We will include:
The fundamentals of equipment set up for action and adventure photography
The importance and role of aesthetics in framing your shot
How to spot photo opportunities on location and how to work with the light at any time of the day
How to direct your athlete to produce the best action shot
How to add layers and depth to the story you are telling through your photo
The fundamentals of post production techniques for more engaging output
Included in the price:
3 days interactive photography instruction from Dan Milner
professional, English-speaking, expert mountain bike guide
private 4WD vehicle for the group
Note: The workshop requires a minimum of four students (maximum 6). If the minimum is not reached two weeks before the start date, you will be offered an alternative guided mountain bike experience,a voucher for a following available date or a refund.
Requirements:
your own camera and memory cards
a backpack to safely carry your camera, water, snacks and any extra clothing for the day
your bike (if a rental is needed, please ensure that is requested in your signing-in request) and appropriate clothing
laptop computer to process your work if you’re seeking feedback on your images and editing techniques
IMPORTANT: the workshop is open to any photographer. It doesn’t matter whether you use a top-of-the-range DSLR or mirrorless with a range of lenses, or a simple point-and-shoot camera with a built-in zoom. You don’t need to be an expert on f-stops and shutter speeds (we will cover that) — but you do need to be comfortable with your camera’s controls, and how to switch between settings.
A mountain bike and equipment are required though we will not be riding too far —this is an enjoyable photo workshop, not an arduous expedition.
